Rua Bioscience to Supply Medicinal MDMA in New Zealand

New Zealand medicinal cannabis company Rua Bioscience has signed a distribution agreement with PharmAla Biotech, following the country’s first approvals for psychiatrists to prescribe MDMA for post-traumatic stress disorder.

New Zealand-listed Rua Bioscience (NZX: RUA) has entered the emerging psychedelic medicine market through an agreement to import and distribute pharmaceutical-grade MDMA supplied by Canadian biotechnology company PharmAla.

Under the distribution and licence agreement, Rua will supply PharmAla’s LaNeo MDMA to authorised prescribers in New Zealand, using its existing pharmaceutical distribution infrastructure and experience supplying controlled medicines.

The announcement follows Medsafe’s approval of two psychiatrists in September 2026 to prescribe MDMA for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), establishing a limited pathway for the treatment in New Zealand.

MDMA-assisted therapy involves administering pharmaceutical-grade MDMA under controlled clinical conditions, typically alongside structured psychotherapy. Although clinical research has produced encouraging results in PTSD, treatment remains highly regulated, with questions around long-term outcomes, patient selection and accessibility continuing to shape its development.

Building on New Zealand’s emerging psychedelic medicine sector

New Zealand has taken a cautious approach to psychedelic-assisted treatment, approving its first psychiatrist to prescribe psilocybin for treatment-resistant depression in 2025 before extending limited prescribing access to MDMA this year.

Australia introduced a broader pathway in July 2023, allowing psychiatrists approved under the Therapeutic Goods Administration’s Authorised Prescriber scheme to prescribe MDMA for PTSD and psilocybin for treatment-resistant depression.

For Rua, the agreement provides an opportunity to enter a second category of regulated medicine without significant additional investment.

The company has established licensing, quality assurance systems and relationships with medical prescribers through its medicinal cannabis operations, which it intends to draw upon when distributing MDMA.

The first shipment from PharmAla will be supplied on a consignment basis, reducing Rua’s upfront capital requirements. Both companies must complete the remaining regulatory and quality processes before distribution begins.

Paul Naske, Chief Executive Officer of Rua Bioscience, said:

“Medicinal cannabis taught us that safe, regulated access to new medicines starts with small, careful steps. Medsafe’s decision on MDMA is one of those steps, and we’re proud to help make it real for patients. This agreement builds on what Rua already does well, adds a new product category to our business, and positions us early in a field we expect to grow as the evidence and the regulatory framework continue to develop.”

PharmAla expands its international distribution network

PharmAla Biotech Holdings (CSE: MDMA; OTCQB: MDXXF) specialises in the manufacturing and development of MDMA and related compounds, supplying GMP-grade medicines for clinical trials and authorised prescribers internationally.

Its LaNeo MDMA product is already supplied in Australia, where authorised psychiatrists have been permitted to prescribe the medicine since 2023.

PharmAla CEO Nicholas Kadysh said Rua’s regulatory experience and established prescriber relationships made it a suitable distribution partner.

“Medsafe’s decision gives New Zealand psychiatrists a path to treat PTSD with MDMA. Those clinicians need a reliable, GMP-grade supply. Rua has the licences, quality systems and prescriber relationships to deliver it from day one, and shares our regulatory-first approach. We are pleased to partner with them.”

Rua has also maintained an interest in psychedelic research through its support of Tū Wairua, an Indigenous-led clinical study at Rangiwaho Marae in Te Tairāwhiti investigating the potential of psilocybin-containing fungi in treating methamphetamine addiction.

A modest market with potential to expand

With just two psychiatrists currently authorised to prescribe MDMA in New Zealand, the immediate commercial opportunity is limited. Rua has acknowledged that initial patient numbers will be modest, and neither company has disclosed expected shipment volumes or revenue forecasts.

The agreement nevertheless gives Rua an established pharmaceutical supplier and an early position in New Zealand’s developing market for psychedelic-assisted treatments.

Any meaningful expansion will depend on additional prescribing approvals, the availability of appropriately trained clinicians and the practical costs of delivering treatment.

Rua and PharmAla will now work with Medsafe to complete the requirements for the first shipment, although a delivery date has not yet been announced.
